California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed concern about a potential “chilling effect” on artificial intelligence development due to a bill recently passed by the state legislature.

On August 28, lawmakers approved SB 1047, which would hold AI companies legally accountable if they fail to implement required safety measures and their technology subsequently causes significant harm. Newsom now faces the decision to either sign the legislation into law or veto it.
